First Step Staffing agency will be at Broad Street Ministry to meet with individuals seeking work in light industrial and warehouse settings, and guiding them through their application process. Last year, dozens of our guests applied for work through First Step and began working within one week—with several of them transitioning to direct permanent employment after three months.
Some details about work through First Step:
Applicants MUST bring non-expired photo ID (Philadelphia Municipal IDs are accepted) as well as their social security card (not xeroxes, originals).
Applicants are required to take a cheek-swab drug test on Thursday as part of the application process.
Placements are full-time and in warehouse and light industrial settings, involving lots of time on your feet
First Step says their aim is to get folks re-connected to work who have had trouble finding a job in part due to the challenges of deep poverty, housing insecurity and homelessness.
Many of their placements are understanding of criminal records.
Pay is low but can be a foot-in-the-door for some individuals, with rates usually running between $9-13. Some placements involving specialized skills like forklift operators, etc. pay more.
First Step can provide transportation assistance (for $5-8/day), allowing folks to begin working even if they don’t otherwise have the funds for their commute
